    De Bortoli Family

This cream silk wedding dress was worn by Giuseppina (Pineta) Bisa for her marriage to Vittorio De Bortoli in 1929 at Bilbul, near Griffith, New South Wales. 4. Prince Charming costume worn by Frederick Boyton Smith
    1928 - 1934

    Museum of the Riverina

The Prince Charming costume worn by Frederick Boyton Smith is of Historic significance, being a good example of a Depression era children's costume. Surviving from a time when children's parents handmade costumes from oddments found around the home - for example, cardboard, crepe paper, cotton wool and scraps of fabric, it is rare to find children's costumes in this worn condition with all pieces intact, in this case, the hat, jacket, breeches, tights and shoes. The accompanying photograph depicting Frederick ... more

This simple tailored black dress in lovely draping crepe de chine would have been practical to ... more

  6. Ted Docker's Wool Suit and Scarf
    1930 - 1940

    Powerhouse Museum

Ted Docker's suit is a fine example of Australian menswear from the 1930s. Ted Docker was a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia, formed in 1920. The suit is said to have been made by the Communist Party of Australia's own tailor, Tim Stillman, a suggestion supported by the fact that the suit is professionally made, yet has no label. The suit was donated to the Powerhouse Museum collections by Ted's son John Docker in 1991. Within the ... more

For the Macedonian migrants to the Illawarra, a journey across the world transformed this woven rectangle from an integral part of daily life into ... more

  8. Privy Councillor's uniform of Joseph Cook, Prime Minister
    1914

    Parramatta Heritage Centre

This uniform and insignia are historically significant because they are a wonderful example of quite a rare and important costume in early Australian culture. The insignia is especially rare, as the number presented every year are limited and recipients after 1948 have to return the insignia to the British Crown upon their deaths. The fact that the uniform belongs to Joseph Cook also makes it significant. Cook was voted in as the MP for Hartley in the NSW Parliament in ... more

  12. Black dress worn by Mrs Clara Boyton
    1910 - 1912

    Museum of the Riverina

This dress is of historic significance. While ladies of the Victorian (and Edwardian) periods are often stereotyped as being svelte, retaining their small waistlines throughout their lives, with the aid of corsetry, this garment is a lovely example showing the transition of shape of a real Victorian. By the second decade of the 20th century (between 1910 and 1915) the differences between Victorian and Edwardian clothing became pronounced. The full flowing skirt of the 19th century evolved into a slim ... more
